Completion screens

As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance player engagement and retention, we redesigned the completion screens for all puzzles at The Telegraph. The goal was to create a more dynamic and interactive post-game experience that encourages players to continue engaging with our suite of puzzles rather than exiting after completion.

Research

We analysed player behavior across various puzzles, identifying patterns in drop-off rates and engagement levels. Through surveys and A/B testing, we gathered insights on what players wanted after completing a puzzle. Key feedback included: “I want an easy way to jump into another puzzle,” and “I'd like suggestions based on what I just played.”

Player personas

Our redesign was guided by the needs of different player types, including casual solvers looking for a seamless transition to another game, competitive players seeking a challenge, and explorers wanting to try something new. These personas helped shape the variety of options available on the new completion screens.

Features

  • Replay or continue: Players can immediately start another puzzle of the same puzzle type for continued engagement.
  • Similar puzzle suggestions: Those looking for a similar experience can opt for an easier variant (e.g., transitioning from a standard crossword to a mini crossword) or a more challenging version (e.g., moving to a cryptic crossword).
  • Explore new puzzles: To encourage discovery, players can choose to try an entirely new puzzle type, broadening their engagement with The Telegraph's puzzle offerings.
  • Personalised recommendations: Based on previous play history, the screen suggests puzzles that align with the user's interests, ensuring a tailored experience.

Outcome

  • Daily increase: 22% increase, resulting in 73% of users engaging with puzzles on a daily basis, significantly boosting overall player activity.
  • Retention increase: +30% with more returning players and higher subscription retention.
  • Drop-off decrease: -20% with fewer players exiting after a single puzzle, leading to more time spent on the platform.

These stats highlight how personalised puzzle suggestions, dynamic content, and exploration drive player engagement. As players interact more with the platform, they become more invested in discovering new puzzles, which opens up exciting opportunities for creating new games and expanding the puzzle experience for players.
